So what happened? Search stopped handing out links
For two decades the job was simple. Rank first, earn the click, land the visitor on your site. That chain is coming apart. Buyers now tend to ask which suppliers make a particular machine, or who services a specific process near to them, and receive a summarised shortlist. No blue links, no homepage, and nothing in your analytics to show it happened.
Rankings were never the objective. Being the source a buyer trusts was the objective.
The mechanism has changed underneath everyone.
What should B2B brands consider first
Industrial and manufacturing brands are unusually exposed here. The buying cycle is research heavy, decisions turn on specifics, and much of the sector's best information sits in PDFs and spec tables saved as images. If a crawler cannot read it, it does not exist for this purpose.
- Answer the question in the first forty to sixty words of the page, then expand. These systems extract passages, not pages.
- Move specifications out of PDFs and into page copy as real text. Claims are not quotable. Facts are.
- Name the people behind your expertise. Anonymous advice carries less weight with buyers and with anything assessing whether a source is credible.
None of it works bolted onto unclear positioning. If a buyer cannot tell what you do differently, an AI summary will not manage it either.
